The inaugural event held August 2013 drew an estimated crowd of over 5,000 spectators over two days of competition. All-in-all, over 50,000 viewers watched the live stream and event rebroadcast. Last year, Jimmy Webb won in a dramatic final over Daniel Woods in the men's field, and Sasha Diguilian narrowly defeated Delaney Miller in the women's division.
This year's competition will feature both men's and women's divisions. Competition will be in the style of a "duel" where competitors race head-to-head on identical routes, with the highest or first to the top advancing to the next round. The competition wall, designed by Walltopia, reaches over 50 feet above the pool and overhangs roughly 25 feet. The climbers use no ropes or harnesses, creating a thrilling plunge into the water below if they fall. There are cash prizes at stake for the competitors.
Tickets for Thursday, Aug. 7, and Friday, Aug. 8, are available at Psicocomp.com. Tickets can also be purchased in person at the Utah Olympic Park (3419 Olympic Parkway, Park City) from the Guest Services Desk located in the Quinney Welcome Center.
For the seeding round on Thursday, August 7, general admission tickets are available for $15 per person. Parking on Thursday night is free. Kids ages 5 and under are free on Thursday and Friday.
Three ticket levels are available for the finals on Friday, Aug. 8: Gold Tickets ($100), Silver Tickets ($50) and Bronze Tickets ($25).
There will be both paid and complimentary parking options available. Paid parking ($5, cash only) will include all areas on-site at the Olympic Park venue. Complimentary parking will be available at the base of Olympic Parkway with a convenient shuttle service up to the pool venue.
The Psicobloc wall will be open daily for public climbing from July 18 through August 24 so that visitors and locals can experience the thrill of deep-water soloing. There will be two-routes available with varying degrees of difficulty. One-hour sessions will be available from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Climbing wall admission is $12 for adults (ages 13+) and $8 for youth (12 & under). Tickets will be available at the Guest Services desk located in the Quinney Welcome Center at the Utah Olympic Park. Climbers should plan to bring their own swimsuits, towels and climbing shoes.
Psicobloc is Spanish for "crazy bouldering," or what is commonly referred to as "deep-water soloing" amongst the climber community. Finuco Martinez is the founder of the original Psicobloc Masters Series, which began in Bilbao, Spain, in 2011. The Park City event is the brainchild of Kevin Bradburn, President of Momentum Indoor Climbing; Mike Beck, Sports and Entertainment Attorney; filmmaker Mike Call, and Chris Sharma, described by NPR as the world's best rock climber.
"This competition comes at a perfect time as indoor climbing is booming and Psicobloc is a really fun way to take artificial climbing outdoors," said Bradburn, who just opened a second Momentum gym location in Salt Lake City.
Event organizer Mike Beck noted, "It was great to hear the positive feedback about last year's event from the sponsors, competitors, and spectators, many of whom called it the best climbing event they had ever been a part of. We really appreciated that support, and look forward to making this year's event better for everyone."
