In what has become a theme for the Park City High School hockey team, no time was wasted jumping out to a big lead against Bingham on Monday night in Salt Lake City.

Behind four early goals, the Miners were up 4-0 by the time the first period came to an end. After scoring one of the first-period goals, Derek Sederman added another in the second period and Aidan Shaw scored twice to put Park City up 7-0 before Bingham finally got on the board with a Joshua Valle goal. Sederman scored again, finishing off his hat trick, before the second period was over to put the Miners ahead 8-1 at the second intermission.

Shaw finished off his hat trick early in the third period as the Miners bumped the score to 10-1 before the final buzzer.

Park City coach Aaron Dufford said getting Shaw involved in the offensive outburst was a nice addition for an already potent offense.

"Especially with Aidan, he’s sort of a bubble player for our varsity team," he said. "But he was sitting in front of the net all night, which is better than behind the net or to the side. He was in the right position and took advantage of it."

As far as Sederman’s hat trick goes, Dufford said that’s to be expected from one of the team leaders.

"Derek’s always been a goal scorer for us," he said. "So there’s no surprise there."

Between the pipes, goalie Ishan Chho had a good game, allowing only one goal on 10 shot attempts. Bingham goalie Nathan Young faced a whopping 43 shots on goal, saving 33.

Following a big win against Wasatch a couple weeks ago, the Miners haven’t been challenged too often in this young season. But, Dufford said, the team can’t lose focus.

"Last year, we lost a core group of seniors," he said. "But we still have about six or seven players who have been here for four years. We’ve come closer and closer each year to winning a state championship, but we haven’t done it yet. This is their last kick of the can. Even though some of these games might be some easy walks, we still haven’t accomplished what we’ve set out to do."

That will be the motivation the Miners will use during a long break before their next game, on Nov. 5. Also, Dufford added, they want to make sure they stay sharp defensively.

"We’ll focus on not getting too offensive-minded," he said. "We’ve got a goal to protect and a goalie to take care of. It’s easy to get very focused on scoring goals and we have to make sure we don’t do that."

And, while the Miners’ schedule hasn’t been too challenging so far, Dufford knows there are tougher games ahead.

"I know Uintah is going to be tough," he said of a game coming up on Dec. 12. "That’s usually our biggest regular-season test."

The game on Wednesday, Nov. 5, against the Salt Lake Stars, is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. at the Park City Ice Arena.
