Park City Ski Swap turns 42
Three weeks before Black Friday, the busiest shopping day in the country, Park City citizens will be lining up outside the Basin Recreation Fieldhouse for what is perhaps an even more important shopping day for Parkites and other ski enthusiasts.
From Nov. 7 to 9, the Park City Ski Team will host the 42nd-annual Park City Ski Swap, where skiers and snowboarders alike can check out a huge selection of gently used gear for sale.
For those interested in selling gear, there are multiple options available to make sure their items end up on the sales floor.
"We’ve got early check-in that happens Nov. 3-6 at either Jan’s or Cole Sport," Park City Ski Team Director Jesse Hunt said. "Then Friday from 3-7 p.m., we’ll be checking equipment in at the Fieldhouse."
Then, on Friday night, the real fun begins, Hunt said. The swap kicks off at 8 p.m.
"We’ve got a big crowd that’s eager to shop on that Friday evening," he said. "We’ve got people shopping right up until 1 a.m.
"We usually have to start pushing people toward the doors," he laughed.
The sale continues on Saturday and Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m. each day. It ends at 6 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Those who sell gear over the weekend can then pick up their checks at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
In order to enter the ski swap, there will be an admission charge each of the three days. On Friday night, it costs $10 to enter. Costs are reduced to $5 on Saturday and $2 on Sunday as inventory begins to decline.
All proceeds from the event go to support the Park City Ski Team, Hunt said.
"This is a big one for us," he said. "It takes thousands of volunteer hours. Our membership is supporting the event in a huge way, which makes it possible. This is really what helps drive our organization we rely heavily on this event."
Hunt said the prices for the gear will be very reasonable for anyone interested in picking up some new gear.
"One of the things that makes this such a successful event is people are selling their own stuff," he said. "People are pricing their stuff to sell and move it, which is a win-win for everybody."
And, he added, selling old gear is a good way to offset the costs of this year’s new ski industry gear.
"The cool thing is people really want to move their old gear and get into some new stuff," he said. "There are so many screaming deals that weekend."
Then, Hunt said, there are other skiers who are looking to add to their arsenals before the snow starts piling up.
"The swap is a fantastic opportunity for people to fill out their quivers," he said. "Whether it’s the odd pair of skis to ski powder on Jupiter or skis perfect for groomers, there’s a ton of great equipment."
Snowboarding gear will also be available at the Ski Swap, he added.
Hunt said it’s important to remember what the swap is all about at the end of the day, which is supporting the kids on the Park City Ski Team. He said excitement is already building for what the team hopes is a big winter.
"We’re excited for the snow to fly," he said. "Obviously we’re excited for getting kids up on the hill and training. We’ve got a lot of kids eager to ski race, which is fun for us."
