As summer arrives in Park City, more youth soccer games and camps will grace the fields of Summit County. One camp will pair a unique sport with the work done on the soccer field.

The first SUP-n-Soccer Camp is scheduled for Saturday, June 25, at Ecker Hill Middle School. Two sessions will be held on that day — one from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and one from 4-7 p.m.

In addition to receiving soccer instruction from 2012 Olympic gold medalist Amy LePeilbet and two-time National Women’s Soccer League champion Liz Bogus, kids ages 7-13 will get a chance to hit the pool at the Park City Aquatic Center (attached to Ecker Hill) for a standup paddleboard lesson.

The SUP portion of the camp will be taught by pro SUP rider and Park City Standup Paddleboarding founder Trent Hickman and will feature instruction on various aspects of the sport.

Bogus said campers will be able to sample everything during the three-hour sessions.

"We will be dividing the kids into groups," she said. "One group will be with Trent in the pool and there will be two groups out on the fields with me and Amy playing soccer and they’ll rotate through the groups."

In the pool, Bogus said Hickman will focus on unique ways to stay fit.

"He’s going to use the boards where he does strength training and yoga," she said. "He’s going to be able to work with them on paddling technique and he’ll also bring in other aspects like fun strength-training exercises and some yoga."

Bogus, Hickman’s sister, said combining the sports of soccer and SUP makes sense in several ways.

"We just wanted to bring in a fun, unique camp," she said. "Often, kids are forced to specialize in one sport when they’re young. Amy and I believe participating in multiple sports builds a well-rounded athlete."

Bogus said she and LePeilbet have teamed up with Hickman for camps in the past, but this will be the first to add SUP to the mix.

"We’ve done a couple camps with Trent up in Park City before, but those were primarily focused on soccer with a strength-training component," she said.

For Bogus and LePeilbet, SUP is more than just a hobby — it’s a way to stay fit during the soccer offseason while minimizing the risk of injury.

"It’s something we’d do to cross-train in our time off," she said. "It helps with general strength and stability and gives you a good cardio workout while being easy on your joints.

"Soccer is definitely hard on your joints, especially as more and more players are playing on turf. Plus, it’s just fun to be on the water."

Each session will be limited to 18 campers. The cost is $75 per player. Bogus said she hopes the SUP-n-Soccer Camp provides participants with a unique experience.

"The camp will be focused on making sure the kids have fun while still receiving top-level instruction," she said.
