Deer Valley opens Friday

Deer Valley will be the last of Park City’s three resorts to open for the summer, and will be the first to close on Sept. 2.

But, though it’s only open for less than three months, there are still plenty of activities to enjoy all summer.

Deer Valley will operate three chairlifts to serve hikers and bikers Snow Park, Silver Lake and Empire. Communications manager Emily Summers said there are plenty of trails to choose from at the resort.

"We have 60 miles of maintained trails," she said. "There are a few designated as ‘hiking only,’ but most are dual use."

But, she added, some of the downhill biking trails are especially gnarly, so visitors should make sure they know proper biking technique.

"Our trail system for biking basically starts at an intermediate level, so we do have a full-service bike school," she said. "Just like the ski school in the winter, we’ve got bike instructors and they’re all based out of Snow Park."

And for those who may be new to the area, there are plenty of ways to get acquainted with the mountain.

"The historical society is still doing their free guided hikes the second Sunday of every month through October," Summers said. "Those start at 9:30 a.m. at the Silver Lake chairlift. They’re really fun and have been really popular. But, you can also hire a mountain guide any day of the week."

When evening hits at Deer Valley, the music begins. Once again, the resort will be offering free Wednesday night concerts featuring local bands.

"You can bring a cooler and a picnic," Summers said. "But our concession stand is always open too."

Weekends feature bigger concerts showcasing acts from all across the country.

"Steve Martin is playing with the Utah Symphony on July 19," she said. "If you want to go to that, you should buy tickets now, because they’re going fast."

The Indigo Girls, another widely-known group, play on Saturday, July 20. For more information on the summer shows, go to the events calendar at http://www.deervalley.com .

If residents or visitors need a place to drop off their kids for a day, a week, a month or even the whole summer, Deer Valley has that covered too, offering a kids’ camp until school starts up again.

"It’s a day camp, and you can do a per-day rate, so it’s good for people who are visiting," Summers said.

In recent years, even though the resort has closed on Labor Day, trails were reopened for some weekends afterwards. That’s not the case this year.

"It’s a hard close on Labor Day this year," Summers said. "There aren’t those extra days. The weather is just a little too variable."
