Fly Fishing Festival enters fifth year

Submitted by Julie Zicha Four Seasons Fly Fishers is hosting the fifth annual Heber Valley Fly Fishing Festival Aug. 22-23, at the River's Edge Resort & Campground located at 7000 North Old Highway 40 in Heber. Vendor booth hours will be from 9 a.m. to 6

Four Seasons has been working in collaboration with many other local fly fishing companies and nonprofit organizations, including Fall River Flyrods, Utah Trout Unlimited, High Country Fly Fishers and the Stonefly Society to bring to the Heber Valley another fantastic festival this year which has a continued emphasis on community-building and the introduction of the next generation to the love of fly fishing.

The Heber Valley Fly Fishing Festival is all free to the public and features live music from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. both nights, along with free BBQ burgers, classes, gear demonstrations, clinics and presentations that will be given by several of Utah’s best anglers. Bring the kids down for the free youth fly fishing clinics taught by local sensations A.J. and Jace Garcia of "Twin Territory" all day Friday and then again on Saturday as the boys from Twin Territory are scheduled to assist newer anglers who show up to participate in the second annual Provo River Kids Fly Fishing derby. The derby is open to all area youths ages 15 and under and is scheduled to run on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with prizes awarded the same day.

Anglers of all skill levels are welcomed and encouraged to attend the event so that they may both learn new techniques and fine-tune their skills with a variety of free clinics and classes taught by Four Seasons guides. Clinics will be held both on and off the water and are set to cover topics such as improving casting ability, learning new nymphing techniques, terminal tackle, bamboo fly rod best practices and more. There will also be a ladies-only "Intro to Fly Fishing" mini-clinic, fly tying and leader building demonstrations. This year’s event will also be featuring a new distance and accuracy casting competition that is being designed by ISE "Best of The West" champion Travis Ruiz of Salt Lake City. This year’s competitions will be held Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. and top finishers in all three amateur divisions will be awarded a new Orvis fly rod on the same day. Four Seasons would like to acknowledge that this year’s casting competition is being sponsored the Orvis Company. There will be additional scheduling information available at the festival check-in.

Some of the companies that will be present at the festival are set to include The Orvis Company, Utah’s own Flycraft USA, Oregon Packworks, Titan Rod Vaults and much more! There will also be some of the country’s finest outdoors artisans in attendance such as Travis Sylvester of Travz Art and Bern Sundell of the Riverstone Gallery in Ennis. This will be a great opportunity to support local artisans and see for yourself why they have both been recently featured by one of the nation’s hottest national gear makers, The Montana Fly Company. Master craftsman and Four Seasons’ in-house custom bamboo fly rod maker Jason Zicha of Fall River Flyrods will also be on-hand with his entire line of finely crafted demo bamboo fly rods to help festival goers who would like to learn how to cast bamboo fly rods and answer any questions for those who dream of owning a custom-built rod.

Registration for the Provo River Kids Fly Fishing Derby will begin the day of the event at 9 a.m. at the Trout Unlimited booth at the festival. You may also pre-register your children by stopping in to Four Seasons Fly Fishers at 44 West 100 South in Heber during normal business hours.

Event organizer Julie Zicha of Fall River Flyrods had this to say about last year’s festival:

"We were delighted with last year’s fantastic turn-out for our festival and kids fly fishing derby. Our festival introduced for the first time the addition of kids-only fly fishing derby for local area kids ages 15 and under and were so pleased to have between 35-40 kids show up to participate in the Provo River Kids Fly Fishing Derby; we were able to give away three brand new fly rod and reel combos to the top finishers by age and gender last year and are set up to do the same again this year."
