Fly Girls fundraiser on Sunday
June 26, 2015
Women’s Ski Jumping USA launched the Fly Girls program last spring in an attempt to get young women involved in the sport and to form a pipeline to the National and Olympic teams.
For the 2015 season, 10 girls have been selected from across the country to join the Fly Girls, four of whom are Park City residents.
Sophia Nester, Sam Macuga, Paige Jones and Kailey Bickner have been invited to the Fly Girls summer development camp.
"The camp is a five-week camp between Steamboat, Colorado, and Park City," Dan Macuga, Sam’s father, said. "It’s not funded, so they have to self-fundraise to pay for the camps."
In order to help raise funds to cover the travel expenses and camp fees, O’Shucks Bar and Grill, located at 8178 Gorgoza Pines Rd. in Pinebrook, is hosting an event on Sunday night.
Dan Macuga said the fundraiser will be a great chance to help young women take the next step in their athletic careers.

"It’s an opportunity for people to sponsor young women in sports as they work to achieve their Olympic dreams," he said. "It also allows them to support a local business that’s willing to help these athletes."
Macuga said he’s grateful for the support of a local business like O’Shucks.
"Bruce Corrigan, who owns O’Shucks, is a good friend and he’s done these types of things for Olympic athletes for years," he said.
Many Olympic athletes have to raise their own funds, so Macuga said events like this help the newly selected Fly Girls learn about that side of their sport. Each girl must raise $1,000 or more for Women’s Ski Jumping USA to fund their participation in Fly Girls.
The cost for Sunday night’s event, which runs from 5:30-8:30 p.m. is $40 for adults and $20 for kids 12 and younger. Heavy hors d’oeurves and a drink are included in the ticket price. There will also be live music, a cash bar and an auction/raffle.
Macuga said there will be several interesting items in the raffle, including a UVEX helmet signed by the U.S. women’s ski jumping team, Skullcandy headphones, five pairs of Pit Viper sunglasses and bike tune-ups from Cole Sport.
Additionally, Olympic ski jumpers Lindsey Van and Jessica Jerome, both from Park City, will be in attendance.
Sam Macuga, Nester, Bickner and Jones all have RallyMe fundraising pages. Go to http://www.rallyme.com to help support the young athletes. For more information on the Fly Girls program, visit http://www.wsjusa.com/fly-girls .
