It took a few minutes for the Park City High School girls’ lacrosse team’s defense to get settled in on Wednesday evening at Knoop Field, but when it did, the game became a mismatch quickly.

Park City found itself leading Lone Peak 6-4 early in the first half. Then, the Miners buckled down, scoring 14 straight goals en route to a 20-4 rout.

McKenna Tychsen got the scoring started less than a minute into the game and would add two more goals in the game. Danielle Lecher scored four goals, Hannah Hyatt added five, Haley Adelman had three, Jenni Gordon and Marina Mayo chipped in with a pair of scores each and Maike Wells scored a goal in the blowout.

In a game against an overmatched opponent like Lone Peak, which just moved into the upper division of Utah high school lacrosse this year, Park City coach Amy Hafets-Cronin said her squad focuses on the bigger goal of winning a state championship.

"Our focus in a game like this is doing the little things right that are going to make us better for the next game," she said. "Communication is a large focus of ours, focusing on teamwork and making sure we’re doing everything we practiced during the week."

Keeping possession is another big focus for the Miners, and Hafets-Cronin was very happy with the way her team performed in that regard.

"The last six and a half minutes of the game, we called out our play to hold possession," she said. "That’s something that’s really important to us. If we get into a really close game, it’s good to know we can hold the ball. All of our girls did an excellent job they were able to keep possession of it for the last six and a half minutes of the game and not even give Lone Peak an opportunity. That’s total teamwork."

The only problem with blowouts like Wednesday is keeping the goalkeeper warm and in game shape. Mireia Calaf didn’t get tested much throughout the game, especially in the second half.

But, Hafets-Cronin said, there are ways Calaf is working on staying engaged in the game.

"Ashley [Peabody], who was our goalie last year, is working with her," she said. "She’s coaching with us this season, which is awesome. She gave [Calaf] a couple tips and pointers on how you can keep yourself engaged and warm in a situation like this squats, walking around she’s not confined in the space between the crease. But, it’s tough, especially when the weather is cold and snowy."

Hafets-Cronin said the entire Park City team played really well on Wednesday, highlighting a few standout players from the win.

"Haley Adelman played a great game," she said. "She had several assists right off the bat. She sees the field really well and she’s a great teammate in the fact that she thinks about how she can set up her teammates to score. And McKenna Tychsen came up with a few draws and ran things on offense.

"Hannah Hyatt did an excellent job in the game as well, coming up with a lot of 50-50 balls and draw controls. She converted a few goals this game, too."

And, even though the defense wasn’t tested much, Hafets-Cronin said she still noticed some strong play on that end of the field.

"Livi Andreini is being really vocal on defense and Luisa Frankenburg came up with a few ground balls," she said. "There was a lot of solid play all around, which is exciting to see."

The Miners improved to 6-0 on the season with the win. They’ll be back at home on Friday, April 4, when they take on Jordan at Knoop Park at 5:30 p.m.
