The Park City High School track team got a little more than it bargained for at the Region 10 meet at Uintah last weekend.

Coach Jeff Wyant decided to rest some of his top female runners for a couple events they normally run, trying to save their legs for the state meet Saturday at BYU.

But, thanks to a strong showing in the field events, Park City managed to hang on and beat Morgan by a single point, 108-107.

"We pulled a few girls out of the distance events to try to qualify some other girls for state and it almost came back to haunt us," Wyant said. "We ended up winning by one point, so it was a close call, coaching-wise. But the girls came through and saved me that coaching embarrassment."

Wyant highlighted the performance of a couple girls who stepped up to qualify for state.

"Leah Anderson qualified in the 400-meter," he said. "Ellie Burton and MacKenzie Merritt stepped up to fill in the distance spots, too."

Merritt won the 800-meter race, with Burton finishing second. Anderson finished fourth in the 400 and Burton won the 1,600.

In the field events, Chrissy Glasmann again cruised to victory in the javelin throw, launching it 146 feet, 7.5 inches, besting the second-place thrower by more than 40 feet.

But Glasmann’s most impressive performance may have been in the high jump, where she took third place with a jump of 4’3", only two inches shy of second place.

Kambridge Van Der Veur also had a good day for the Park City girls, finishing third in the javelin, second in the discus (Glasmann was third) and first in shot put, where her throw of 40+ feet gave her a comfortable victory by a foot and a half.

The Miner girls took the top four spots in the mile, with Burton winning, Alyssa Snyder finishing second, Maddie Criscione taking third and Sophie McDonald wrapping it up in fourth. In the two-mile race, McDonald claimed victory.

On the boys’ side, Park City cruised to an easy Region 10 title, beating second-place Morgan 105-89, giving Park City the team title over Morgan 213-196.

Wes Miller highlighted the boys’ squad, winning the mile and two-mile races. Sam Edmunds finished second in both races and Jesse Case completed a Park City podium sweep in the two-miler.

But the key to Park City’s success on Saturday was the sprint events.

"Zach Slusher came in second in the 100," Wyant said. "That’s the first time we’ve had points in that in a while."

Jake Krieger finished third in the 200 and 400 and Josh Pelegrin won the 300-meter hurdles.

In the boys’ field events, Ben Lykes finished third in the long jump, Sawyer Pruitt took second in the shot put and Douglas Emerson was second in the high jump.

Heading into Saturday’s state meet, Wyant is confident that the girls can compete for a 3A title. There won’t be any holding back in the state meet either, he added.

"We’re at the end of the season now," he said. "We’ll be battling for points against Desert Hills, it looks like. The weather will be favoring them, because it’s going to be hot and nasty down there."
