The ex-teacher and local Boy Scout leader accused of child porn possession is now facing federal charges.

Jose Ardanaz Ezcurdia, 31, who taught second grade at Parley's Park Elementary -- previous press releases from the Park City School District had stated he was a fifth-grade teacher -- was arrested last weekend after police allegedly found child porn at his home.

Ezcurdia was federally indicted Wednesday and charged with one count of distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography, according to the charging documents. Distribution of child porn carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison with a five-year mandatory minimum, while the maximum potential sentence for distribution is 10 years. Both charges carry potential $250,000 fines.

Ezcurdia also is facing five second-degree felony counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, filed Monday in Summit County's 3rd District Court, where he is due to appear Aug. 18.

The Park City School District has fired Ezcurdia, who according to a statement of probable cause filed in 3rd District Court admitted to possessing child porn. A press release from the district states that a search of a district laptop provided to Ezcurdia yielded no evidence of improper material.

According to the press release, Ezcurdia, who is from Spain and was in the United States on a student visa, had gone through two background checks prior to his becoming a teacher at Parley's Park Elementary -- one while he was in Spain and another when he arrived in Utah.
