This summer, Coalville will be bringing back its same popular events to draw people to the community, though with some changes this year. Mayor Trever Johnson has worked with residents this year to reformat the Barbeque Festival, in which he will also be demonstrating his barbeque skills.
"The Barbeque Festival wasn't a good format and it was on a bad date," Johnson said. "It's been in September when you have football and school starting. We're also doing away with the contest and just doing a community dinner."
Moved from September to June 14, the Barbeque Festival will be held at the Fairgrounds and will feature a barbeque dinner, a beer garden and live entertainment from the Simister Band, Crystal Clear, Dance In Motion and the Chance Anderson Band. Fireworks will also be held and a kid's zone will be available.
"A committee and I have worked very hard to brainstorm ideas to make [the Barbeque Festival] a lot more of an inclusive event," Johnson said. "Changing the venue and the time will make it a well-attended event."
Although Johnson said the Echo Resort Fishing Derby has not yet been finalized, he said he expects it to be held June 7, the weekend before the Barbeque Festival. The Fishing Derby offers hourly cash prizes for the biggest fish caught as well as cash prizes for the first through third biggest fish caught during the day.
Free movies and music in Coalville's Pocket Park will be offered every Friday night beginning June 20, running until July 25.
The 2014 Super Cruise Car Show will be held Saturday, July 12. During the car show, classic and restored models drive into Coalville's Main Street during the afternoon and later line up along the street for viewing. Food, Oldies music, dancing, fireworks and awards round out the event.
A summer of events in Coalville would not be complete without the Summit County Fair, which will take place this year from August 2-9 at the Fairgrounds. The fair will feature a demolition derby, the Miss Summit County Pageant, a parade, rodeo, exhibitions, competitions and more. A full schedule is posted on summitcountyfair.org.
