The theme of this year's 79th annual Oakley Independence Day Rodeo and Celebration is "We the People," so it is appropriate that not just one person has been selected as grand marshal.

The husband-and-wife team of Blake and Barb Frazier are the two marshals who will be leading the July 4 parade through Oakley, as well as holding court at the Patriotic Program immediately after.

The honor of being grand marshals is acknowledged by the couple, a long-time fixture of organizing and running the celebration, but the modesty is still there.

"We're float-makers," said Barb, 62, with a laugh. "I'd rather make them than ride them."

Blake has lived most of his 63 years in Oakley, a town where his grandfather, Robert Frazier, was the first mayor. Blake served for 19 years in the city council, nine years as mayor, and 28 years as Summit County auditor. (He is retiring this year.)

Barb moved to Oakley from Marion when the two wed 37 years ago.

"We've just put a lot of time into the town," Blake said. "It's because we care."

As for parade itself, Blake has two wishes for the car he will be riding in. "I hope it's something sporty and they let me drive," he said.
