Nuestra Voz

Jenny Villanueva Wojcikowski

The biweekly Nuestra Voz column is back to provide you with the latest events, issues and services concerning the Latino community of Park City. This space will also be a forum to highlight the diverse and vibrant cultures of Central and South America that add to the splendor and beauty of our hometown.

The first service I’d like to highlight is one of the many offered by Daisy Hodson, Multicultural Services Librarian, at the Summit County library. Although Daisy was initially hired to expand the Spanish language collection, her role has become as diverse as the community she serves.

"When I first started in this position I began interviewing members of the Latino community and those who work with them to find out what was needed," she said. One serious concern was the necessity to increase literacy among many of the adult, Spanish speaking immigrants in the county. "We didn’t have such a program in place but I sought out resources to get something like that implemented."

After receiving a generous grant from the Utah State Library and by working in partnership with the Centro Latino for Literacy based out of California, an adult literacy program is now offered at the county library located in the Richins Building at Kimball Junction. It is a computer-based system that teaches basic reading and writing skills. The program is simple to follow and complements the busy lives of the participants.

Daisy works privately with each individual offering guidance and assistance as they navigate the course. On average, the program takes about three months to complete. Daisy urges partners in the community to get the word out about the program. "It takes a lot of courage for people to come forward and use these services but the people who complete it are transformed. They are more confident, it’s liberating for them."

The program is free. Hours and times are flexible; please contact Daisy Hodson at 435-615-3948 for more information.

School district must lead

Park City School District is being investigated by the federal Office of Civil Rights for persistent and ongoing violations. It’s a very big deal that has a lot of our community on edge.
