The Region 10 tournament is scheduled to be held at Wasatch High School in Heber today, Sept. 29, and the Miners are hoping to earn the No. 2 seed out of Region 10 prior to the 3A state tournament at Oct. 5-6 at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.
"Their singles positions are pretty tough," said Park City head coach Tim Donnelly of Judge. "I think we've been focused and targeting our practices more on beating them and what we have to do to be more competitive against those guys."
The Miners fell to the Bulldogs 4-1 last week in Salt Lake City, but Donnelly said he was encouraged by the results. The No. 1 doubles tandem of Katie Hardman and Lauren Weed won their match and the No. 2 doubles duo of Kenna Tychsen and Natalie Frost barely missed out on a win at Judge.
"I think we've got a good chance at the state tournament of doing that again," Donnelly said. "It's kind of incremental steps. We're trying to be careful not to peak too soon as a team."
In order to earn the No. 2 seed, Park City must have a good showing against the Bulldogs, as well as against region rivals Juan Diego and Wasatch.
"They're very confident," Donnelly said. "We've had some great practices. All the girls have a great game plan. They're focused on their opposition. They know what their challenges are."
Park City will be led in its singles matches this weekend by junior Solveig Karlsen in the No. 1 slot, while junior Dani Lecher will man the No. 2 spot and senior Caroline Davis will continue in her No. 3 position.
After a number of nagging injuries throughout the season, Donnelly said his A-team is finally at full strength at the perfect time, but said the state tournament is where the athletes really flip the switch. The region tournament, he said, is about securing the best seed possible for the state tournament.
"State is where they amp it up," Donnelly said. "The region tournament is a good preliminary. Judge is the champion of Region 10, but a tournament is a tournament. It's competition all at once. That's really the important part of this."
