The X Games are over. After last week's festivities in Aspen, many of freeskiing and snowboarding's biggest names made the short trip to Park City for the Sprint U.S. Grand Prix at Park City Mountain Resort.

For one competitor the competition means coming home. The event began with training days on Monday and Tuesday and will continue with qualifications today and Thursday before the finals on Friday and Saturday.

Park City's Alex Schlopy gets a chance to show what he can do on the halfpipe in front of his hometown fans. He said he'll do everything he can to pick up a win on his home mountain.

"That would be awesome," he said. "I always love competing at home. I don't think there are enough events out here."

The 20-year-old freeskier, who didn't compete in the superpipe event at the X Games, finished seventh in the slopestyle competition in Aspen and fourth in his qualifying heat of the big air competition, missing the finals in that event.

He's hoping to do a lot better than that at PCMR this week.

"Basically, it's motivation to keep pushing," he said. "I need to work on a few new tricks."

He'll have to land something special to beat David Wise, who took home his second straight gold medal in the superpipe event in Aspen, completing a double cork 1260 and a switch double cork 1080, among other tricks.

Schlopy isn't sure which tricks he'll pull from his arsenal, waiting to see what the weather is like on the day of the competition.

"You never know," he said. "It all depends on what the course has to offer. You just have to base it on the conditions."

X Games superpipe bronze medalist Simon Dumont is also scheduled to appear at the Grand Prix. Women's superpipe gold medalist Maddie Bowman will lead the lineup on the women's side.

In the snowboard halfpipe event, Scotty Lago, Greg Bretz and Louie Vito, who finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively at the X Games superpipe contest, will lead the men's slate. Gold medalist Kelly Clark and silver medalist Elena Hight are the top names on the women's side.
