Four days after alumna Julia Mancuso won bronze in the super G at the World Championships in Schladming, Austria, Park City Ski Team racers took Brundage Mountain by storm as they raced in three USSA Intermountain Division (IMD) Women's U16-U18 super-G races Feb. 9-10 in McCall, Idaho.
With clear skies promising good visibility, and no new snow for more than 10 days, conditions on the mountain were perfect for the field of 63 female athletes. Samantha Busby of the Sun Valley Ski Team won the first of Saturday's two races with a time of 1:13.84. Sun Valley's Haley Cutler (1:13:84) was second, and Park City's Megan Dingman (1:14.15) finished third. Rachel Jakob placed seventh, while teammates Natalya Polukoff, Claire Thomas and Lauren Keller, finished eighth, 14th and 15th, respectively.
Rowmark's Hannah West (1:13.81) won the second race of the day, with Alaska's Juliette Parke (1:14.60) finishing second and Sun Valley's Cutler (1:14.70) taking third. Jakob bettered her morning performance to claim fourth place with a time of 1:14.83. Fellow PCST racer Cheech Minniear finished strong in seventh place, Fiona Morrison took eighth, and Nicole Greene had a strong finish in 13th place.
They say "three's the charm," and that was certainly the case on Sunday as Rachel Jakob (1:10.35) won Sunday's super G with the fastest run of the day. Rowmark's West (1:10.72) placed second, Sun Valley's Cutler (1:11.28) was third, and PCST's Dingman (1:11.74) finished fourth. Other top 15 finishers from the PCST included Keller (ninth), Polukoff (13th) and Minniear (15th).
The final race in McCall was a women's Intermountain Cup giant slalom, which was a make-up race from a cancellation at Snowbasin in early January. The Park City Ski Team women were poised for the GS as Taly Polukoff and Rachel Jakob each won a run and captured first and second place respectively. PCST's Megan Dingman solidified the statement with a 4th place.
The next competition for U16 athletes will be in Park City March 1-3: two giant slaloms and one slalom in the Eagle Race Arena.
