PC Karate Team competes at U.S. Open

On March 29-April 1, the Park City Karate Competition Team traveled to Las Vegas to compete in the USA Karate Open and Junior International Cup. This event is hosted by the USA Karate (aka USANKF), which is the national governing body for karate in the United States. The USA Open and Junior International Cup is one of the largest karate tournaments in the world. Park City Karate is the only school in Park City sanctioned through the U.S. Olympic Committee.

The Park City Karate Team took 14 team members to the competitions and brought back 16 medals.

Junior International Cup Medalists

Rose McLaughlin received gold medals for first-place finishes in both kata and kumite events. Sara Eichner brought home a silver medal in kata. Bronze medals were given to Nash Clevenger and Kenyon Compton for kumite. Ari Clevenger, Tiana Clevenger, Kia Comstock and Kenyon Comstock all received bronze medals for their performances in kata events.

USA Open Medalists

Ari Clevenger, Sarah Eichner and Joe Talerico all received gold medals for their performances in kumite. Silver medals were awarded to Sarah Eichner in kata, and Nash Clevenger and Christopher Joe in kumite. Kia Comstock won a bronze medal in kumite.

Additional team members who competed and performed very well included Daniel Dominguez, Jill McLaughlin, Liam Neu, Graham Rogers, Patrick Currie, Kip Christensen and Cara MacDonald.

These competitions are considered the pinnacle of karate competitions in the United States and internationally. More than 3,000 competitors from about 52 nations gathered at The Paris to compete during the three-day event.

Karate is the ultimate fitness program for both adults and children, providing a full workout: stretching, aerobic and anaerobic conditioning, strength and coordination. Park City Karate offers a traditional style of Japanese karate called Wado Ryu. "WA" means harmony or balance and "DO" means way or road in Japanese.
