Church readies for garage sale, is accepting donations

Alan Maguire, The Park Record

The Park City Community Church’s preparations for its annual garage sale are underway.

The sale itself will be Saturday, June 6, but first, items to sell need to be acquired.

The garage sale items are provided entirely by community donations and the church, located at 4501 S.R. 224 in Park City, will be accepting donations next two Saturdays, May 23 and 30, from 9 a.m. to noon.

These Saturdays will not be the only drop-off opportunities. During the week leading up to the June 6 sale, items can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 5-8 p.m.

The church is accepting all manner of items for the garage sale, including ski clothes, baby items, furniture, bicycles, art and sports equipment.

There are, however, items they won’t accept.

"We take everything except stuffed animals, ski equipment, electronics, books, mattresses and undergarments," said Andrea Solum, a member of the church who has spearheaded the garage sale effort the past few years

"You would be shocked at the things that we get regarding undergarments," she said.

If people have large items they would like to donate that they need assistance transporting, help is available.

"Mountain Movers has always volunteered, and it’s always been free, to do pick-ups. And so they’re collecting large items on June 1 and June 3, and if people have large items that they want to be picked up, then they contact the church, and they just schedule a pick-up."

Money raised from the garage sale "goes to Park City outreach and it goes to KUEF, which we support."

KUEF is the Kenyan Urithi Education Fund, a nonprofit that "works in partnership with local Kenyan communities to develop and grow projects that enrich and enhance education," according to its mission statement.

"Last year we raised over $10,000 that we were able to give back to the community," said Solum.

The June 6th sale will be divided into two sections.

"The downstairs items are priced and everything upstairs is fill-a-bag," Solum explained. "The first hour and a half it’s $5 per bag, and then it drops down to $3 a bag and then it drops to $2 a bag and then $1 — fill everything you can for a dollar."

Any unsold items remaining at the end of the day will be donated.

"All of our leftover stuff is donated to MS Society. So they come and pick everything up and use it too," said Solum.
