People’s Health Clinic readies fourth Silver Queen Derby

For the past four years, the People’s Health Clinic, a nonprofit organization that helps provide medical services for the uninsured in Summit and Wasatch County, has presented the Silver Queen Derby.

This year’s event will be held Sunday, June 8, at Stein Eriksen Lodge.

The event, which will feature lunch, a silent auction, a pop-up boutique by Farasha and live music by the Park City Treble Makers, is a fundraiser specifically organized to help the clinic sustain its women’s wellness program, said Jenny Dorsey, fundraising director for the People’s Health Clinic.

"The programs include well-woman exams, screening mammograms, prenatal care, education, dental and vision exams," Dorsey said during an interview with The Park Record. "More than 68 percent of our patients are women, and that’s one of the reasons why we created the Silver Queen Derby."

This year, the event will draw attention to the People’s Health Clinic’s mammogram service.

"Sadly, our state has one of the lowest screening rates, nationally," Dorsey said. "Utah’s overall breast cancer average is 101 incidents per 100,000 women."

Summit County has the highest breast cancer rate in the state with 148.6 cases per 100,000 and Wasatch County has the second-highest number of breast cancer at 137.7 per 100,000, she said.

"It’s unbelievable that these numbers are so high because we live in this beautiful community and see women out running, skiing, biking and being healthy," Dorsey said.

In more cases than not, women who have died from breast cancer never knew they had it until it was too late, she said.

"A lot of times women who have health insurance say they don’t have time to have a mammogram or take these tests for granted," Dorsey said. "And those without insurance are less inclined to get that screening done."

On reason is because they are worried what will happen when something is found.

"They don’t know what their options are or what kind of care they can get," Dorsey said. "That’s where we provide a valuable service."

Thanks the clinic’s mammogram program and partnerships with the Park City Medical Center, Susan G. Komen — Utah, a nonprofit breast cancer prevention organization, and The Playing for Life Foundation, located in Park City, more than 100 women have access to this diagnostic service every year.

"For many of these women, this would be their first screening ever," Dorsey explained. "The Silver Queen Derby is highlighting this and those of us who attend will help provide access to these women for care."

Other sponsors include Right at Home and Geri Briggs and attendees will have another opportunity to donate for a fund-a-service and get a little gift from these organizations, Dorsey said.

"All the donations will go straight to the clinic," she explained.

In addition to the lunch and entertainment, the derby will introduce the People’s Health Clinic’s Pink Ladies — Pam Carroll, Mary Ciminelli, Tina Williams.

"These wonderful women, who are volunteers, don’t have medical background, but provide such a valuable service by ensuring that our female patients ages 40 and older get an annual mammogram screening," Dorsey said. "They go through a list and put a pink dot by names of the patients who are eligible for the service."

The patients receive vouchers and are able to visit the Park City Medical Center’s mammography suite.

"One thing that I want to emphasize is that the People’s Health Clinic is always looking for volunteers," Dorsey said. "Even people without medical background, such as these three ladies, can provide vital opportunities to our patients."

Dorsey said she enjoys organizing The Silver Queen Derby.

"It’s hard to believe we’re going on four years," she said. "We’re excited to hold it again and thankful to Stein Eriksen Lodge for hosting and underwriting this event."

The Silver Queen Derby, an annual luncheon fundraiser for the People’s Health Clinic, will be held at Stein Eriksen Lodge tomorrow, Sunday, June 8, from noon until 3 p.m. Tickets are $100 per person. For more information, contact Jenny Dorsey at 435-333-1871 or by emailing jenny@phcpc.org.
