Pianist Michael Gurt will return to town to play two Park City Beethoven Festival concerts this weekend.

The Park City Beethoven Festival Concert Series continues this month as the Festival welcomes back award-winning virtuoso concert pianist Michael Gurt.

The Gurt will perform two concerts, Friday, Nov. 9, and Saturday, Nov. 10, at Park City Community Church, 4501 N. S.R. 224.

The Friday concert, which starts at 7:30 p.m., is the Festival's showcase contribution as part of the Live PC, Give PC fundraiser campaign that celebrates the nonprofits in the Park City area. The program includes Robert Schumann's masterpiece, the wonderful "Carnaval" Op. 9 for Solo Piano, Johannes Brahms' Sonata No. 1 for Clarinet and Piano and Schumann's "Fairy Tales" for Clarinet, Viola and Piano with clarinetist Russell Harlow and violist Leslie Harlow.

Tickets are $25 for general admission and $20 for students and senior citizens. Music students ages 9 and older will be admitted for free.

These added concerts make up the new Beethoven Festival Concert Series, which audiences will continue to be able to enjoy in addition to the annual Summer Festival in July and August...” Leslie Harlow, Park City Beethoven Festival director

He went on to win prizes in international competitions in Pretoria, South Africa, and Sydney, Australia, and has performed as soloist with the Chicago Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Utah Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony, the Memphis Symphony, the Capetown Symphony, the China National Symphony Orchestra and the Natal Philharmonic Orchestra in Durban, South Africa.

The pianist has made solo appearances in Alice Tully Hall and Weill Recital Hall (Carnegie Hall) in New York, the Ambassador Auditorium in Los Angeles, Orchestra Hall in Detroit, City Hall in Hong Kong, the Victorian Arts Center in Melbourne, Australia, Baxter Hall in Capetown, South Africa and the Attaturk Cultural Center in Istanbul, Turkey.

Gurt recently completed a tour of Brazil. Gurt has collaborated with the world- renowned Takacs String Quartet and the Cassatt String Quartet, and has performed at the Australian Festival of Chamber Music in Townsville, Queensland. He has served on the juries of both the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition and the New Orleans International Piano Competition, and he has recorded on the Naxos, Centaur, and Redwood labels.

Park City Beethoven Festival Director Leslie Harlow explains, "Our favorite artists have built very successful international careers over the years and are now so busy that we have started inviting them to choose their dates for performing in Park City. We are lucky to have the great venues and flexibility to arrange the concerts to fit their schedules. The response from the artists and our audience has been great. These added concerts make up the new Beethoven Festival Concert Series, which audiences will continue to be able to enjoy in addition to the annual Summer Festival in July and August."

Currently the Beethoven Festival brings outstanding solo artists together to present an average of thirty-five concerts and outreach performances each season. The festival's summer concerts makeup Utah's oldest classical music festival. Throughout the rest of the year the Festival will be presenting the Beethoven Festival Concert Series. Sometimes the concerts will be grouped into season festivals, but that will depend on the availability of the artists involved.
