Aerie blaze is contained
August 27, 2010
Firefighters from Park City, North and South Summit have contained a 12-15 acre brush fire on the Aerie. According to Park City spokes woman Phyllis Robinson, a crew will remain on the scene tonight to handle hot spots.
The blaze was reported at 4:45 Thursday afternoon and originated near the Lost Prospector Trail. Aerie Drive was closed for several hours to facilitate emergency vehicles. Smoke and flames were clearly visible from many vantage points around the city.
There was no property damage but the fire did spread to within 100 to 200 yards of some nearby homes. According to Park City Fire District Battalion Chief Bob Evans, "We had some very concerned homeowners and very justifiably."
Evans said the fire originated near a high-use trail and may have been human caused.
The fire began on a slope that was difficult to access. Salt Lake Helitack was called in haul water from the lower Deer Valley ponds to the mountainside.
