American Airlines’ in-flight magazine: that’s Park City on the cover
March 15, 2011
Parkites flying American Airlines from mid-March to the end of the month will likely recognize the place where the cover photo was taken.
It’s at the McPolin Farm along the S.R. 224 entryway and the iconic white barn is in the background, a scene that Park City people know well and that American Airlines’ passengers will look at while flying.
The editors at American Way, the in-flight magazine of the airline, selected Park City as the spot for a photo shoot as part of the magazine’s Road Warrior feature, an annual contest in which passengers compete for the title of Road Warrior.
"Cities love it when we come calling," Adam Pitluk, the executive editor of the magazine, said in an interview.
Pitluk appeared at a Park City Council meeting last week with a small group from American Airlines to talk to the elected officials about the magazine feature.
He said in an interview he prefers Park City over other mountain resorts, leading him to pick Park City to be featured. He said the Road Warrior feature had not been set in a winter resort before.

"After spending a few days there, we couldn’t help but fall for the charming mountain town," the opening page of the piece says.
The Road Warrior feature brought five winners to Park City for a photo shoot in early January. The magazine is loaded with images from Park City — the McPolin Farm, Main Street and Old Town among them. It also spotlights the Sundance Film Festival and apres ski spots. A Q&A with Heidi Voelker, a former Olympic skier who has long been affiliated with Deer Valley Resort, is included.
Pitluk said the magazine’s readership is 1.6 million per issue, providing Park City with a publicity boost as the ski season approaches its end.
The American Way piece featuring Park City comes four months after Park City was spotlighted in another well-read magazine, National Geographic Traveler. That magazine has a circulation of 727,277 and put Park City in its November-December issue, describing attractions inside Park City like the Egyptian Theatre. The piece in National Geographic Traveler was centered on Main Street. Park City more often garners attention from magazines centered on skiing.
Bill Malone, the president and CEO of the Park City Chamber/Bureau, said his organization assisted American Way with ideas about Park City, accommodations while staffers were in Park City and dinners. He said the piece provides a "whole heck of a lot of attention" and noted it mentions small businesses, restaurants and hotels.
"We’re hopeful it will pique people’s interest," Malone said.
