Armed-robbery suspects arrested in major police operation

by Jay Hamburger, of The Record staff

Police officers in Park City late Monday afternoon arrested three suspects in a West Valley City armed robbery reported earlier that day.

Officers from the Park City Police Department, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office and the Utah Highway Patrol descended on Aspen Villas at approximately 4:15 p.m. after West Valley authorities contacted the local authorities with suspect information and a possible license-plate number.

Rick Ryan, a Park City captain, said officers were positioned on the entryways and saw the suspect’s car pulling into the Aspen Villas parking lot off Kearns Boulevard. He said approximately 12 officers responded.

An officer pulled over a white van and found three suspects and a baby girl, according to Ryan. The three were arrested without incident.

The police found a sawed-off shotgun and a handgun inside the van, Ryan said.

"We had overwhelming numbers, luckily," he said. "This was high risk. We knew they committed a violent crime with weapons. They fled."

One of the suspects is a cousin of somebody who lives in Aspen Villas, Ryan said.

Details of the suspected armed robbery in West Valley City were not immediately available.
