ATV crash critically injures Coalville teen

It was unclear on Friday whether a Coalville teenager was wearing a helmet when an all-terrain vehicle she was riding struck a tree Thursday night in Morgan County.

Brianna Schmidt, the teenage daughter of Coalville Mayor Duane Schmidt, suffered head injuries in the crash and was flown in critical condition to McKay-Dee Hospital Center in Ogden at about 7:45 p.m., the authorities said.

Schmidt’s condition was stable Friday when she was taken to University of Utah Health Sciences Center, where her mother is employed, a McKay-Dee Hospital nurse said.

A teenage boy, whose bones were broken in the crash, was riding the four-wheeler with Schmidt at the time of the accident, Morgan County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Scott Peay said.

The accident occurred in an area near Lost Creek reservoir northwest of the Summit County line where much of the land is privately held, Peay said.

Trucks cannot access the remote area, he said in a telephone interview, adding that both patients were flown to the hospital in separate helicopters.

"Our deputies never were on scene," Peay said, adding that officers held interviews at the hospital after the crash.
