Auction, tour raise thousands for Peace House

When five pints of homemade ice cream sell for $450 at auction, either the proceeds are going to charity or the dessert was made by someone famous enough to warrant such a price.

In the case of Ginny Schulman’s ice cream that sold for $450 at the 15th Annual Luxury Home Tour Auction, the proceeds went to Peace House.

"Every year I donate five pints of homemade ice cream and this year it sold for $450," said Schulman, who is a volunteer for the tour. "It has to go in the live auction, not the silent one, because no one would pay $450 for five pints of ice cream if it wasn’t a live auction. It was a great surprise."

Tour, on Aug. 12.

Tickets for the home tour are available at http://www.luxuryhometour.org or by calling 658-4739. Tickets are $30 in advance or $40 the day of the event, and tickets include a 20 percent discount to either the Utah Opera’s performance of "The Pirates of Penzance" or any Utah Symphony concert at the 2006 Deer Valley Music Festival. Proceeds from ticket sales go to Peace House.

The auction, which raised $65,000, was held in preparation for the home tour. Last year the auction raised $41,800.

"We’re very pleased," Schulman said. "My personal goal was to hit $60,000 this year and we’re beyond that. We even have a few items that didn’t make minimum bid, so we still have to find a way to sell those as well, so we’ll probably end up closer to $70,000."

Tickets to the event were $15, and tickets for the opportunity drawing were $20 for five. There was a silent auction as well as the live auction, with all items being donated by Park City businesses.

"It’s an in-kind exchange," Schulman said. "It’s like bartering. They give us an item and we give them an ad in The Luxury Home Tour Catalog that you get when you come to the Luxury Home Tour. As the price of the item goes up, the size of the ad goes up."

Schulman said the generosity of those in attendance made the auction a success.

"It’s a lot about the spirit of giving here," she said. "It’s all about the Peace House. Suzanne Harris saw an item with a $150 bid price and she didn’t think that was enough so she ended up paying $1,500 for it. That’s the spirit of giving."

Jane Patten, executive director of Peace House, said the event brings in more than 20 percent of the annual budget for the shelter.

"This event has made a huge difference in our ability to provide the services we do, and it has allowed us to broaden what we can do," Patten said. "Without the support of the Luxury Home Tour and Auction I don’t think we could have done it — at least not as quickly as we have."

She said the increase in profits from the last year will be used to fund areas that have been cut in the past and to increase the services they currently provide the community. Two focuses, she said, will be educational programs and transportation, which the group now provides on a limited basis.

"It was a great event," she said. "There was a lot of support for Peace House and the women we help. The sponsors were very generous when they were donating items and the energy was great. We thought of it as a great success."
