Auto-deer accidents reported on S.R. 224, U.S. 40

The Park City Police Department last week received at least three reports of drivers hitting deer, with one of the accidents apparently resulting in a serious car crash.

The three reports occurred within approximately 90 minutes of each other on area highways, the police said.

They included:

  • On Sunday, May 22 at 12:10 a.m., a driver hit a deer on S.R. 224. The driver was not injured. Public police logs did not provide information about the deer.
  • On Sunday, May 22 at 11:37 p.m., a driver hit a deer on U.S. 40. The driver was eastbound, or the direction toward Heber, at the time of the accident, the police said. The driver crashed. Park City police logs did not provide details.
  • On Saturday, May 21 at 10:51 p.m., a driver hit a deer on S.R. 224, with the police indicating the animal was found south of the Deer Valley Drive-Bonanza Drive intersection. The deer’s right hind leg was broken, the police said.

The snow late in the season has kept wildlife at lower elevations than is typical at this time of year. The animals normally climb to higher elevations in the spring, but the snowfall in recent weeks has made foraging for food more difficult higher up in the mountains.
