Basin Rec to host open house

Alisha SelfOf the Record staff

As the weather cools off this fall, many athletes, teams and fitness fanatics will be forced indoors to recreate. Luckily, Basin Recreation is prepared. The facility recently installed new turf on its indoor field and added updated fitness equipment to its weight room at the Fieldhouse.

On Sunday, Aug. 2, the Snyderville Basin Special Recreation District will unveil its newest attractions at a Community Open House from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The event will also serve as an unofficial celebration of the Fieldhouse’s fifth anniversary in Park City.

The public is invited to check out all that the Fieldhouse has to offer, including various fitness classes, batting and golf practice cages, and a Kids’ Karnival from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. featuring a bounce house, water slides, face painting, music, refreshments, games and other family-friendly activities.

Admission to the Fieldhouse and all activities will be free for the day. In addition, monthly and yearly fitness passes and punch cards will be offered at last year’s rates, which are 10 percent lower than current costs.

The Fieldhouse staff decided it was time to upgrade the indoor field when the base of the original turf started to crumble. "It was pretty worn out after five years of heavy use," explains Fieldhouse recreation coordinator Matt Strader. "We had a problem with loose material coming up and causing some bumps under the turf that we couldn’t get rid of."

They turned to Hellas Construction, the company that recently installed synthetic turf fields at the new Dallas Cowboys stadium, for help. Since the Fieldhouse will be featured on a tour during the National Recreation and Park Association conference in October, Hellas agreed to give Basin Rec a deal on its latest product, Matrix turf.

"It’s top-of-the-line stuff," says Strader. The turf features a silica pea-gravel base topped with a layer of migration-proof rubber to facilitate superior traction and stability.

Among the groups that will benefit from the new surface are local soccer clubs, lacrosse leagues and high school teams that use the indoor field on a regular basis. "It’s used by everybody in the community all the different outside organizations as well as all of our youth leagues, youth camps and adult programs," says Strader.

The second major upgrade at the facility involves new Nautilus machines, dumbbells and weightlifting equipment. The Fieldhouse leases its weight-room equipment in five-year increments, Strader explains. "We do it so we can refresh and keep new stuff coming in every so often," he says. "As far as the taxpayers are concerned, it’s no extra money; it just was an additional monthly payment in our lease."

The Fieldhouse is located at 1388 W. Center Drive, behind the Newpark Hotel at Kimball Junction. For more information, call 655-0999 or visit http://www.basinrecreation.org.
