Bored Idaho drifter wafts into town
Budding pastry chef loves to bake and ski.
Sandra Bowcutt says she moved to Park City last summer because she was "feeling a little bored and ready for a change." If change is the only constant, she’s been at it constantly since she was old enough to move away from home.
She was born in 1982 in Idaho Falls, Idaho, the youngest child of Connie and Mike Bowcutt. She has two older brothers, Peter and David. She describes herself as outgoing, punctual, detail-oriented and adventurous.
Bowcutt learned to ski when she was just two years old. "My father and mother were both ski instructors, so it sort of came naturally," she says. "My brothers and I raced on the Idaho Falls Ski Team all through elementary and junior high. I won a lot of races and since then, if I have the chance and the time, I’m on the ski hill," she says.
"Really, I’m happy doing anything outdoors; I like horseback riding, camping and trap shooting. My dad taught me to shoot a shotgun and I really enjoy kicking my brothers’ butts in sporting clays."
Growing up, she developed a taste for other adrenaline sports. "Once I went bungee jumping off a bridge in Twin Falls," she recalls. "It was about one in the morning and I remember screaming all the way down. What a rush and a thrill, but I was so happy to be back on the bridge."
Bowcutt says she’s always had a love affair with cooking and baking. "It’s my passion, hands down! Ever since I was a little girl and able to see over the kitchen counter, I was in there coming up with some crazy dish or dessert."
There seemed to be no limit to her curiosity and creativity. "When I was 15, my brother Peter asked me to make his wedding cake," says Bowcutt. "I took a couple classes and at the end of it had a seven-tier wedding cake. All through high school I made a lot of wedding and birthday cakes and desserts for people."
Her school years in Idaho Falls were relatively uneventful. She played clarinet in the band and was on a local dance team for eight years. She went to work for a newly-opened Outback Steakhouse in Idaho Falls during her senior year. She graduated from Skyline High School in 2000.
The following fall, Bowcutt moved to Twin Falls, Idaho and enrolled at the College of Southern Idaho. She studied restaurant management for two years and worked part-time at an Outback Steakhouse in town. Predictably, she grew restless.
"I took a trip to San Francisco in 2003 with my Mom and I absolutely fell in love with the city," says Bowcutt. "I went back to Twin Falls, packed up all my stuff and moved there." She transferred to an Outback Steakhouse in the city and continued her job as a hostess and server. "I pretty much knew that restaurant chain front-to- back." Stricken with wanderlust after only two years, she was on the move again.
In 2005 Bowcutt re-connected with a long-lost cousin, who convinced her to move to Las Vegas, Nevada. "I threw everything I owned into a Budget moving truck and headed south," she reports. While there, she went to school and bought her very first house. Surprising, she eschewed work at an Outback Steakhouse, instead taking a job as beverage manager at Harrah’s Hotel and Casino.
"I decided to try skydiving while I was living there," she says nonchalantly. "I got a little nervous in the plane though. When it was time to jump I couldn’t stop shaking. After my partner pried my hands from the door, we jumped. When the chute opened and I realized I wasn’t going to die, it was the most exhilarating experience of my life. We landed and I got down and kissed the ground."
Bowcutt graduated from Sin City’s Le Cordon Blue Culinary Institute last March. "Not long after graduating I started my own business, Delicious Sins," she says. "I made cakes, cookies and other sinful desserts. My dream would be to start my own bakery someday. Until then, I’d be happy if I could just bake something every day."
Since high school, Bowcutt hasn’t lived anywhere for more than two years. It didn’t come as a surprise to anyone when last summer she announced she was feeling bored and was ready for a change. "I called a friend about a job opportunity in Park City. I got the job as a server and bartender at the Hotel Park City, packed a couple of bags and moved here in July. So now here I am until I find something more intriguing probably two years from now," she says with a grin.
Bowcutt admits that a more intriguing or better place may be harder to find this time. "Park City reminds me a lot of where I grew up," she says. There’s always something going on year-round. I love to ski and this place has some great skiing. The culture here is wonderful and the people are nice and down-to-earth."
"I’m an OK golfer and I like the fact that I can come to town early and get in nine holes before I go to work at the hotel bar, which is right by the course," she continues. "There’s great biking and camping around here too. It’s a town for everybody."
"I’d like to start my own business here if I stay," she says. "Park City has a great atmosphere and it’s a natural for the pastry business."
It remains to be seen if Bowcutt makes it past the two-year mark in this town. Already, she has a pet peeve and it’s not surprising coming from a young woman who has lived in San Francisco and Las Vegas. "I don’t like driving 30 minutes down the hill to go shopping or bowling," she complains. "In big cities everything is at your fingertips." She also notes with dismay that "everybody here knows everybody and their business."
Bowcutt sees her life as an adventure. "It’s something different and wild every day. I don’t know how it will turn out or where I’m going but, as long as I live it to the fullest, I’m happy." For now, she’s home.
