Boy injured in snowmobile crash

Patrick Parkinson, of the Record staff

An 11-year-old Salt Lake County boy’s leg was injured Saturday morning when he was struck by a snowmobile operated by another 11-year-old in Weber Canyon east of Oakley. "The boy suffered from a possible broken femur," said Detective Ron Bridge, a spokesman for the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. "The good thing about it is it was not compound." A man from Salt Lake County was sitting on the snowmobile behind the Salt Lake County boy who was operating the machine. The 11-year-old squeezed the throttle, accelerating the snowmobile and throwing the man off the back, Bridge said. The snowmobile then struck two other 11-year-old boys at about 10:45 a.m. One of the boys had a leg injury. The other was not hurt in the crash. "This was just an accident," Bridge said. "It absolutely could have been worse." Nobody involved in the accident was wearing a helmet at the time, Bridge said. "It is not legal for an 11-year-old to be on a snowmobile without a helmet," Bridge said in a telephone interview Saturday. "Bottom line is you need to be equipped with safety equipment." The crash occurred in rugged terrain in the Pine Mountain area and a medical helicopter was used to retrieve the injured boy. "Pine Mountain is a gated community with cabins, roadways and open space," Bridge said
