File state taxes on computer for faster return
The Utah Tax Commission is encouraging taxpayers to file state income tax returns online. Those who do not may have to wait significantly longer, a recent press release said. Electronic filers will receive refunds in a matter of weeks, but those who file on paper may have to wait several months, according to commission spokesperson Charlie Roberts. About 5,785 people in Summit County filed their state income taxes by paper last year. The commission hopes many of those will file electronically this year.
Budget reductions have lowered the number of temporary workers hired, so a delay in refunds for paper filings is expected. The tax commission points out that there are three electronic options available: 1) Filing a joint electronic return with the federal income tax. 2) Purchasing a commercial tax preparation software package. 3) Filing for free on the web at taxexpress.utah.gov.
