Travel industry professionals confirmed what Ski Magazine readers have been saying for years — that Deer Valley is at the top of its game.

Over the weekend Deer Valley Resort was named the Best Ski Area in the United States, joining 19 others that received best-in-their-country awards.

Deer Valley already is a five-time first-place winner of Ski Magazine’s reader survey of ski areas in North America, but according to Deer Valley president Bob Wheaton, this recognition comes from a global audience.

"For us to get first place in the U.S. in that arena is quite something," he said, adding that he was told more than a million votes were cast.

Wheaton went on to credit his staff for the achievement. "It is clearly due to the great folks that are here on staff, their commitment to our goals that they work toward on a daily basis. It is just rewarding to stand beside them."

The Best Ski Area in the World title was bestowed on Val Thorens in Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, France, and The Ritz-Carlton at Bachelor Gulch in Colorado earned bragging rights as the Best Ski Hotel in the World.

This is the first year for the World Ski Awards event, which is a new offshoot of the 20-year old World Travel Awards. The gala ceremony was held over the weekend in Kitzbühel, Austria.

According to a press release from the World Ski Awards organization, the goal of the competition is "to drive up standards within the ski industry by rewarding the organizations that are leaders in their field. Votes were cast by professionals working within the ski industry – senior executives, travel buyers, tour operators, agents and media — and by the public."

The finalists in each of four categories, Best Ski Resort, Best Ski Hotel, Best Ski Boutique Hotel and Best Ski Chalet, were notified in October.

Park City was also represented in two other categories.

The Goldener Hirsch Inn was named the best Boutique Hotel in the United States. According to General Manager Kelley Davidson, "We are very proud of this." He noted that other finalists in the category included the Washington School Inn, also in Park City, and the Rusty Parrot in Jackson, Wyo. and said he was pleased to be included in their company.

Davidson noted that the Goldener Hirsch is one of the only family-owned and -operated boutique hotels in the country. It is owned by the Spencer F. Eccles family, who, he said, visits regularly during the ski season and loves to ski at Deer Valley.

Casa Nova, also located in Park City, was named Best Ski Chalet in the United States. According to the its website, Casa Nova is a 13,000-square-foot luxury home in Deer Crest that can accommodate 25 guests.

According to the chalet’s Chief Happiness Officer and Estate Manager Jenni Haines, "Our goal is to know a guest’s wants before they do." The chalet, which is part of Virtuoso Hotels and Resorts, was designed by the architect Costantino Grandjacquet and is kicking off its seventh ski season.
