Local company saves houses from flood season

Rainbow International Restoration and Cleaning is in the midst of their busy season, restoring order to floods in Summit County homes, sometimes due to the overflow of nearby bodies of water, but often due to cracked pipes and tanks that froze during the winter.

Tuesday, owner of Park City’s Rainbow International franchise Greg Fuqua took his team to Pinebrook after a broken water heater caused a flood in a four-story home. They helped to remove furniture, and spent four hours drying rooms with fans and dehumidifiers. The Rainbow International team also spent the time necessary to comfort the homeowners.

Stephanie Fuqua, co-owner of the franchise, says her husband Greg has been asked if he was a paramedic, because of the way he handles damage-control situations.

"We don’t save lives, but we save houses," she says. "Floods can be pretty traumatic, so we don’t just finish a job and say, ‘that’s it.’ We follow up the next day and see how [our clients] are doing Customer service is our first priority."

As Greg Fuqua explains, water has the capacity to "do damage like a fire, but in a different way."

Rainbow International lead technician Korey Tesch says that while he’s been on the job with Fuqua, he’s seen floods tear walls and ceilings down and send televisions and couches floating. Last year, Fuqua and Tesch traveled to a neighborhood in Bountiful after a mudslide to dig out the basements that were packed to the ceiling.

"Floods can be stressful," Tesch said. "The best part of this job, I think, is going into a home with a family frowning and leaving them with smiles on their faces."

Rainbow International cleans up after disasters, but is also capable of repairing and refurbishing homes post-flood damage. The company has a sub-contractor in addition to a regular staff, and crews are trained in carpentry, carpet installation, and fitting sheet rock. The company cleans carpets, upholstery and drapes year-round and focuses on those services during the colder months of the year.

Though each season brings its own flood hazards, May is the month when Rainbow International’s phone rings the most, Fuqua explains. As the weather warms up and lawns dry out, homeowners begin to use plumbing that may have become brittle during the winter, and unknowingly will run water through a busted pipe. Washing a car for 30 minutes with a broken system can flood a basement, according to Fuqua.

The Fuqua family has lived in Park City for five years and began serving the Salt Lake area through their Rainbow International franchise six years ago. Greg says he cleaned carpets as a way to partly finance his college education.

This is the company’s first year serving Summit and Wasatch counties and it has just recently joined the Park City Chamber/Bureau and the Park City Board of Realtors.

The Fuquas consider it a privilege to be able to work in their own community, but they also recognize a need for their services here as well. By the end of the month, they will be doubling their staff to accommodate the demand for their services.

"Park City seems to be a community that appreciates local businesses and more and more services are being made available locally," Greg Fuqua says. "If a house needs our services we can usually get there within minutes, which is something companies like ours in Salt Lake just can’t do."
