Local retreats give much-needed help to cancer patients

Jodi Holmgren knows what it’s like. She’s battled breast cancer and understands what it puts women through.

So it’s with that firsthand experience that Holmgren, executive director of Image Reborn Foundation, leads the organization in its mission to provide help for women fighting the disease. Image Reborn Foundation gives women no-cost customized relaxation retreats — held primarily in Park City — offering them a much-needed break from the everyday stress of their lives.

Holmgren talked about her own experience of attending a retreat. She was a single mom working to support a family, still trying to manage life while fighting cancer. For her, the retreat was a sanctuary, a respite from it all.

"There isn’t a real opportunity to just stop and recharge," she said of life with cancer. "You get stuck going through the motions to do what needs to be done. Not a lot is done to address the emotional and mental aspects of cancer."

The luxury retreats provided by the Image Reborn Foundation are available to any woman diagnosed with breast cancer, with registration for each event happening on a first-come, first-serve basis. Retreats are typically limited to 10 women to provide an intimate setting, Holmgren said. Activities at the retreats include discussion groups, massage therapy and rejuvenation time.

"It’s nice to be taken care of and pampered," Holmgren said, adding that hearing the experiences of other women diagnosed with breast cancer at the retreats can also be helpful. "A lot of time, there’s a feeling that your identity as a woman has slipped away."
