Park City-based Allgood Provisions gets a little nutty
The plan has worked perfectly so far.
Allgood Provisions, a company that makes artisanal snacks, started off with the basics — organic nuts, dried fruits, trail mix — to get its brand off the ground a few years ago. But for Jake Boyd, founder and CEO of the Park City-based company, now is the time to start shaking things up.
"The whole idea was to start with those, then start to innovate and differentiate and branch out," he said.
The result of a bit of brainstorming and a lot of hard work: the Oven Stoked Series, a home nut-roasting kit that allows customers to cook up fresh snacks in the comfort of their own homes. According to Boyd, Allgood Provisions couldn’t find anything quite like its new product on the market.
"The whole catalyst was we wanted to create something unique and create an experience for our customers and the people who support us," Boyd said. "That’s what great brands do, I think. That’s where it came from. We want to go beyond just, ‘Well, here’s some food.’ We want to get them involved a bit."
As Boyd tells it, the process of creating the Oven Stoked Series stretches back into last year. It began with him experimenting in his home kitchen, where he soon realized his culinary skills weren’t quite up to the task. So he contacted top culinary schools around the country, searching for a chef whose expertise was a good fit.
Boyd ended up finding exactly what he was looking for. Chef Ryan Ross came on board and developed the flavor profiles and ingredient mixes for the roasting kits. Then, it was all about refining the product. Boyd would host parties with family and friends, asking them to sample several different flavors and provide feedback.
"We’d invite them over, make a couple batches and have tasting parties," Boyd said. "We’d just say, ‘Hey, what do you think of this one? What do you think of this one?’
"It’s been a year of that — just getting feedback," he added. "But during that process, everyone is also getting hyped about it because they know we’re working on it. Everyone wants to know when it’s coming out."
The outcome of all the work and tinkering? Three flavors, all featuring rare ingredients: black truffle rosemary almonds, Mexican chocolate pecans and West African curry cashews. Each kit comes with nuts, seasoning and oil. All customers must do is mix them together, spread them on a baking sheet and bake them in the oven for 10 minutes.
"When they come out, you have fresh, roasted nuts in your kitchen," Boyd said. "It’s cool because you get to see the ingredients mixing and when you take it out of the oven, you get this great aroma. It’s very a nostalgic, sort of homey aroma that reminds you of fall."
Boyd maintains that Allgood Provisions is not a "health food" company, but it’s a plus that the Oven Stoked Series happens to be healthy. All the ingredients are organic and naturally gluten-free.
"But," Boyd said, "it always tastes good. That’s always been the balancing act with our brand. We support eating healthy and living a healthy lifestyle, but it doesn’t mean that you should deny yourself some good, tasty food. You can have both."
Allgood Provisions is set to launch the product in November. But Boyd is hoping to enlist customer support to do so. He has set up a campaign on Kickstarter, a website that allows companies to crowd-fund projects. Allgood is hoping to raise at least $20,000.
"I’d like to find a way to launch this regardless of if we’re successful on Kickstarter," Boyd said. "But being successful on there would go a long way. Even a small amount goes a long way with us. We can stretch it out and make it work as a young, scrappy brand."

A study pegged the number of Sundance Film Festival attendees at 122,313, with the event generating an economic impact of $182.5 million. Both numbers represent a slight decrease from the 2018 festival.
