Park City company lays the groundwork for success

For Jeff McKinnon, who has spent his life building and fixing and creating, flooring is an art form. He finds pleasure in a perfectly tiled floor, and there is joy for him in a carpet that looks just right in a home.

"I love that. Deep down, I’m an artist," he said. "And I would never do paintings or sculpture or whatever full-time, but I really enjoy creating things. I really enjoy getting something done and looking back at it. It’s a good feeling."

McKinnon has plenty of opportunity to practice his art form these days. His new flooring company, Topmark Floor & Design, opened its doors in June. The business offers all kinds of flooring — including hardwood, carpet, tile and epoxy — in addition to carrying and installing carriage house garage doors. Plans are under way to bring in a line of window blinds and shutters, as well.

Customers have the option of buying the merchandise and installing it themselves or receiving the company’s all-inclusive service that includes installation.

"We take any job we can do, beginning to end — the whole thing," McKinnon said. "But if somebody just wants to buy material, they can do that, too."

McKinnon’s career began in flooring nearly 30 years ago, when he was 21 years old. In recent years, though, he worked remodeling homes and installing granite countertops. But as he began to see the need in Park City for a flooring company, the industry that gave him his start tugged at him once again.

Topmark Floor & Design sprouted from that seed. What makes the company special, McKinnon believes, is his experience. He’s done everything from welding vinyl flooring in the operating rooms of hospitals to laying quarry tile in a restaurant.

"You probably couldn’t ask me a question about it that I either don’t know off the top of my head or couldn’t find within five minutes," he said. "I’ve seen everything and I’ve fixed everything.

"You’re going to run into situations where people don’t know what to do. There are a lot of unique situations. But I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it all. Because there are only so many ways you can build a house. I’ve seen them, fixed them and dealt with them. Problem solved."

The company has received a good response since opening, with McKinnon measuring for several jobs a day. One thing clients have liked is the variety the store offers. Though the three-room sales floor is small, it is lined with hundreds of tile and carpet sample displays.

Its location, at 1490 Munchkin Road, however, is not as visible as McKinnon would like. So he expects business to pick up further as word spreads.

"I’m finding that people don’t know we’re here," he said. "A lot of people I talk to, even though we have pretty good signs out front, they just don’t see it for some reason.

"So maybe we need to figure out better marketing options," he added with a chuckle.

McKinnon does not expect the location to be a long-term issue. Just months after opening the business, he already has sights set on eventually moving to a new location. It may even be inevitable, depending on the outcome of redevelopment ideas for Bonanza Park — where the company is located — that is under discussion by the city.

"This building, I’m sure, is just going to be gone," he said. "It should be. It’s really not a super nice-looking building, and it doesn’t really fit here anymore. If that happens, or if we have the ability to buy real estate and buy our own building, that’s what we’re going to do."
