Calves die in I-80 crash
November 6, 2009
Five calves died and one fled when a semitrailer loaded with cattle crashed Wednesday on westbound Interstate 80 near Coalville, the authorities said.
The 44-year-old driver of the truck was taken to the hospital with minor injuries at about 11 a.m. He was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
The tractor-trailer was east of Echo Junction when it drifted off the right side of the road, investigators said in a prepared statement.
"The [truck] then overcorrected to the left and began to spin around and rolled onto its right side," according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
The semitrailer was hauling 96 calves. Five died and a calf that escaped was not found at the scene, investigators said.
Some traffic was delayed as crews cleaned up the crash.
