July 13, 2011
Kaleb Mitchell, age 12, died late Tuesday night of injuries sustained in a car accident on Interstate 80 westbound near Coalville. His hometown was not yet determined.
The car accident occurred Tuesday around 7:15 p.m. according to Utah Highway Patrol Corporal Todd Johnson. The driver, Robert Mitchell, 68, from Sandy, who authorities believe to be Kaleb’s grandfather, drifted to the right of the road on a left-hand curve near Echo Junction. Johnson said Mitchell then over-corrected to the left, crossed both lanes of westbound traffic and impacted with the guardrail on the left side of the road.
Kaleb was ejected from the car and was taken by helicopter to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City where he died of severe traumatic injuries, according to the Utah Highway Patrol website. The other occupants of the vehicle were Marilyn Mitchell, 66, from Sandy, and two females, both 9-years old, whose residence is unknown at the time. All other occupants in the car received minor, non-life threatening injuries. The Utah Highway Patrol is investigating whether Kaleb was wearing a seatbelt.
