Child recovering after being hit by truck in Kamas

Cause of accident still under investigation

A young girl on a bicycle was struck by a pickup truck Friday in Kamas, sustaining a serious injury.

Anapurna Card, 6, of Kamas, was entering the crosswalk at the intersection of S.R. 32 and S.R. 248 at 2:22 p.m. on Friday, July 5, as Sean Wharton, 48, of Marion, was attempting to make a right turn from S.R. 32 to S.R. 248. Wharton was driving a black Chevrolet Silverado.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol report, Wharton had stopped at the red light and then proceeded with his right turn. As he began to turn, Card entered the crosswalk from Wharton’s right. Wharton struck Card with his Silverado and one of the vehicle’s tires ran over her once, according to Utah Highway Patrol Corp. Todd Johnson.

Card sustained serious injuries and was transported to the Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City. Johnson did not know Card’s injuries, but said she needed to be taken to a Level IV trauma center.

On Thursday, a spokesperson for the hospital said Card was discharged and according to Anapurna’s mother Cynthia, her daughter had sustained a broken femur and a broken pelvis.

When asked how her daughter was feeling, Mrs. Card said, "She’s doing good."

Johnson said Wharton has not been charged as the case is still under investigation.
