Students at Trailside Elementary School learned about seatbelt safety from Utah Highway Patrol Sergeant Matt Smith on Oct. 27. According to Smith, car accidents are the No. 1 cause of fatalities for children. Trailside is a part of the Click It Club, which started in Salt Lake City last year as a pilot program. The club is now educating more than 20 schools throughout Utah, in an effort to promote seatbelt safety. Smith said the Click It Club administers surveys twice a year asking parents and students questions about safety. Parents said their kids often encourage them to buckle up. Students in Sandra Janich’s fourth-grade class got to experience what a car crash might feel like going 5 mph in a crash simulator. Seatbelts were fastened for the crash test.
