Clothing that sounds like a bakery
What happens when modern chic combines with the need for practical clothing? Cake.
When a young niece began mispronouncing Kate Monroe’s name as "cake," she knew that’s what she wanted to name her business when it opened last July.
Growing up in Park City, Monroe said she never found clothes she wanted to wear in local stores and always shopped online.
After managing a retail store for several years Monroe decided to go back to school and then open her own.
"I thought, ‘I can do this.’ I got my MBA, and that was that," she said.
In deciding what kind of store to open, Monroe said she met other people expressing the same sentiment she had felt in high school.
Targeting shoppers like herself, Monroe only sells clothes available online. Many boutique owners don’t decide what look or style to promote until they see what’s available at trade shows. Monroe said she knew exactly what she wanted going in.
She describes her products as "modern basic." There are no sparkles or sequins. It’s "upscale, casual clothing," she said.
Designer premium denim, casual dresses, cashmere sweaters and coats that fit the Park City lifestyle are her mainstay, she said.
A lot of high-end clothing is impractical, and seasonal, Monroe said. She wants to sell products that someone can wear year-round, year after year.
Friend Kris Dumas agreed.
"Someone told me it was to be a high-end clothing store, and I thought, ‘Oh no, a smaller version of Chloe Lane.’ It turned out to be completely the opposite," she said.
Cake Boutique offers "classic and wearable" clothing, she said.
"Why not invest in a cashmere sweater, you’re going to have it a few years?" she said.
Stylish clothing isn’t the only thing that catches the eye at Cake Boutique. Monroe hired a firm to make it "industrial modern," but not as in modern industry. The store is comfortable and eye-catching with stacked antique ballot boxes in one corner, and old cabinet doors in a collage on the opposite wall.
Reclaimed wood covers the structural elements and display cases while the gate to an old freight elevator is a backdrop for some of the products.
"Mixing rustic and industrial, Kate has put her own unique stamp on the inside of the store," Dumas said.
Adam Moore, a salesperson at the store, wants men to come check Cake Boutique as well.
"With men’s clothing it’s about quality, not quantity, per se," he said. "We’ve got some really good quality garments, stuff you’re not going to see anywhere else."
One example is Rag & Bone, one of the best men’s lines for quality and consistency, he said.
"Katie does a great job buying. Take a break from jeans and Levi’s and come in and get something different," he said.
