Court hearing slated for chiropractor

A court appearance is scheduled Monday for a chiropractor in Park City who allegedly planned to blow up his office at 1901 Prospector Ave.

"He admitted that he wanted to burn down the whole building for insurance purposes," information the Summit County Attorney’s Office filed against Matthew Ian Zarit states.

Zarit, 36, is charged in 3rd District Court with possession of an incendiary device, a second-degree felony, and attempted arson, a third-degree felony.

A dentist with an office in the building called officers to the scene June 2 at about 1 a.m.

"[What] appeared to be a bomb or bomb-making equipment was located in the office building," court papers filed June 10 state. "[Zarit] placed four five-gallon [black] containers filled with gasoline and sodium hydroxide in the hallway of the office building."

Investigators say Zarit admitted to police that he "had a timing device to ignite the whole building," the court filing states.

Firefighters and bomb technicians from Salt Lake County secured the scene and Zarit was arrested at his home in Holladay about five hours later, according to Park City police Capt. Rick Ryan.

Suspicious equipment found at the office building included the gasoline, sodium hydroxide, road flares and a fuse, according to Ryan.

Evidence in the suspect’s office in the building tied him to the supplies, investigators claim.

Zarit is scheduled to appear in the Snyderville Basin before Judge Bruce Lubeck June 16 at 8:30 a.m.
