Deer Valley to open Saturday
Every year, it seems, Deer Valley opens at a very opportune time.
The past couple years, the resort has opened on the heels of a powerful snowstorm, allowing it to prepare several ski lifts and trails for guests.
This year is no different, according to communications manager Emily Summers.
"We got 18 to 20 inches of snow this week and the snowmaking conditions have been perfect," she said. "We’ve been making snow around the clock since it’s been so cold. That’s one of the reasons we open in early December. The past couple years we’ve been blessed with a big snowstorm on opening week."
Twelve of Deer Valley’s 21 chairlifts will be open this weekend, serving 15 ski runs.
"From Little Baldy Mountain to Quincy Express," Summers said. "There will be access on four of six mountains."
This weekend will also feature the 22nd annual Celebrity Skifest, where celebrities will team with former Olympians for a series of fun races.
"It’s just a fun event to kick off the season," Summers said. "It’s an exciting race from 12-2 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday on the Birdseye run. And the Saturday race is televised the next day on CBS."
Want to switch things up a little bit? Summit Meadows Adventures opened for snowmobiling Dec. 4. Located in Browns Canyon, the group offers guided tours on 7,000 acres of land.
While skiing during the day, make sure to stop in at the Silver Lake Lodge for some turkey chili. And, after a long day on the slopes, The Mariposa is open for après dining.
"We have a special running until the 20th," Summers said. "Buy two small plates, get the third free."
Overall, Summers expects everything restaurants, ski runs, chairlifts, etc. to be up and running before too long.
"It should all happen pretty quickly after opening," she said. "But it’s kind of a day-to-day analysis."
The level of excitement turned up a notch after the new snow this week, Summers said. Because, after all, skiing is what the season is all about.
"The snow really amped everyone up," she said. "When the conditions look this great and all the trees are covered in snow and it looks like more trails will be opening quickly, it makes it even more exciting."
