Deputies probe counterfeit case

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a man who might have attempted to pass a counterfeit $20 bill at 7-Eleven, 1815 Canyons Resort Drive.

"As he tried to pass it the attendant actually saw that it was counterfeit," said Detective Ron Bridge, a spokesman for the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. "The attendant had to use a marker to mark it, which didn’t produce the correct color The guy simply said, ‘Oh man, I got that from work the other day.’"

The man was described to a dispatcher on June 16. The incident was reported at 10:50 a.m.

The caller said the man is white and in his early 20s. He has short brown hair and was wearing a dark T-shirt and brown shorts. He has a medium build and is roughly 5 feet 7 inches tall.

"We want to locate the gentleman to find out what his story is," Bridge said. "Talking to him is going to dictate where the investigation goes."

The man may have a history of passing counterfeit money, he said.

"It’s unknown if the gentleman actually mistakenly had it," Bridge said. "It all depends on what the information brings forth"

Witnesses at the gas station were able to collect information about the license plate on the man’s vehicle. Officers have also reviewed surveillance footage.

The counterfeit bill was left inside the store.

"He paid with other money and left," Bridge said.

Investigators do not know the name of the man.
