Paying homage to great American theater and literature, Park City Performing Arts Foundation kicks off the 2009-2010 Eccles Center Season with the classic story of Boo Radley, Tom Robinson, Atticus Finch and his daughter, Scout. Based on Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and performed by the renowned Montana Repertory Theatre (MRT), "To Kill a Mockingbird" opens on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m. at The George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Center for the Performing Arts (1750 Kearns Blvd.).

"Traditionally, we start off each season with a show that really speaks to a diverse audience of all ages and stages," explains PCPAF executive director Teri Orr. "This year, we are so lucky to have the opportunity to present a remarkable company of seasoned actors performing a piece of extraordinary theater. Montana Repertory’s "To Kill a Mockingbird" will set the tone for a new season of live, inspirational entertainment and phenomenal student outreach."

Set in Maycomb, Alabama in 1935, "To Kill a Mockingbird" transports audiences to six-year-old Scout Finch’s world, which is dominated by a mysterious neighbor named Boo and an embattled community. As her lawyer-father defends a black man accused of raping a white woman, Scout’s experience becomes a tale of racism and the heroes who stand up against it. Through Atticus’ example, it becomes a story of the power of honesty, courage, integrity and respect. A full-length play, Christopher Sergel’s adaptation of Lee’s 1962 novel does justice to the author’s warm, witty and wisdom-filled work.

Established in 1968, Montana Repertory Theatre is one of the oldest and most respected touring companies in the nation. Under the leadership of artistic director Greg Johnson, the company is committed to its mission "to tell the great stories of our world to enlighten, develop, and celebrate the human spirit in an ever-expanding community."

"Powerful and gripping," writes Pueblo, Colorado’s The Chieftan of MRT’s "To Kill a Mockingbird" performance, praising the acting as "up to the impressive writing." And according to The Charleston Gazette, "This is what theatre is meant to be."

Montana Repertory Theatre’s performance of "To Kill a Mockingbird" will be accompanied by an outreach program for Summit County students, which is part of the missions of both PCPAF and MRT.

"Since student outreach is such a vital part of what we do, we’re honored to be presenting a company that is as wholeheartedly committed to exposing young people to the magic of live performance as we are," says Orr. "In tough economic times as school budgets are slashed and the arts dismissed, this educational outreach really matters. I can’t imagine a more meaningful way to start off a season."

Tickets range from $18 to $65 (as with all regular season performances, children 12 and under are half price and seniors receive a 20 percent discount). Tickets are $5 in for Summit County students in grades K through 12). Tickets and information are available at The Eccles Center box office, 435-655-3114 or http://www.ecclescenter.org.
