Latinos in Action learning to sail
June 25, 2013
The Latinos in Action Program (LIA) at Park City High School, is helping students get their sea legs at the Jordanelle Reservoir. Six LIA members who had zero previous sailing experience are being taught the basics of sailing and are having a thrilling time doing so.
LIA president Ketzel Morales, who will be a senior at PCHS in the fall, participated in the sailing lessons last week. She explained that she got involved with LIA when "I moved schools and wanted a club where I could feel welcome."
Morales excitedly described how the LIA students twice capsized their boat when they had trouble reading the direction of the wind and waves (nobody was hurt); the instructors then coached the students on how to get their boat back to being right-side-up. Morales described the experience as "so much fun," but "scary at the same time."
Latinos in Action provides training and education opportunities to students in the Park City community. LIA students volunteer hundreds of hours towards community service projects.
