Running with Ed Registration approaching

The 4th annual Running With Ed event will take place May 18. The 38-mile race only has six days remaining for regular registration before the price jumps to $500 for teams of five, according to Jennifer Billow, Park City Education Foundation communications manager.

"The 38-mile, 10-leg race, offers everything from trail to pavement, challenging climbs to fast downhill, easy legs for beginners and tough ones for experts," Billows said.

Running with Ed race founder and director Tim Chesley started the event with his wife, Joanna Chesley, four years ago to celebrate public schools and Park City’s enthusiasm for outdoor activities.

During the first year, 80 teams signed up, the second year 100 teams participated and last year 130 teams joined the event. So far, the same number of teams that competed in last year’s race have signed up, but more are needed, according to Billow.

"Every year we set a fundraising goal and in order to meet that mark this year we are looking for 160 teams to sign up," Billow said. "Park City is a healthy place that wants their children to be healthy too. When [Chesley] created the event, we weren’t looking for another gala to raise money here in Park City, but an event the community could get excited about."

Last year, the foundation, along with the fundraising teams, raised $135,000 for Park City School District schools. Money raised is distributed through designated school site grants for the next school year.

This year, organizers have teamed up with the Ragnar Relay Series organization to get an insider’s edge to holding a large race like this, according to Billow.

"Ragnar has given us a lot of support over the year," Billow said. "Through all of their help we were able to avoid learning the aspects of this type of event from scratch. It only took us a fraction of the time it normally would to grow this event as big as it has become."

A mandatory captains’ meeting is being held today at The Yard Park City at 6:30 p.m., located at 1251 Kearns Blvd. Course changes, race logistics, safety and fundraising will be discussed, concerning the race.
