School bell ready to ring on another year

It's that time of year again.
Students in Park City are set to report back to class Wednesday, opening the book on another school year. For parents and students, that means saying goodbye to summer and making the final preparations to ensure a smooth transition back to school.
The first order of business for parents is to check that their students get properly registered, said Superintendent Ember Conley. Students returning to the Park City School District can register online, though they must provide proof of residency and pay school fees.
At Park City High School, the registration dates are Monday and Tuesday, according to school websites. Treasure Mountain Junior High School students must register by August 23. Parents of students at the rest of the district's schools should contact individual schools for more information — instructions for online registration were emailed to parents earlier this month, and office staff is available in each school for further help.
Conley said registration for new students is also ongoing. She recommended parents contact the schools their children are set to attend for instructions. The process includes providing documents such as proof of residency, a birth certificate and immunization records as well as paying school fees.
Students who would like to transfer to Park City from out of the district, or those who most recently attended a charter school and did not meet the June 30 enrollment deadline, must fill out an open enrollment form to be considered for enrollment.

For younger students, the district's four elementary schools were scheduled to hold back-to-school nights early this week. The schedule for those events is as follows: Jeremy Ranch Elementary School, Monday, 4-6:15 p.m.; Trailside Elementary School, Tuesday, 4-5 p.m.; Parley's Park Elementary School, Tuesday, 5-7 p.m.; McPolin Elementary School, Tuesday, 3-4 p.m.
At the beginning of each school year, the district also likes to remind parents and community members of proper transportation protocols. First, drivers need to be aware that school is back in session and should be vigilant on the roads.
"The biggest message is always, 'Please be cautious and safe as you come to the school,'" said Todd Hauber, the district's business administrator. "At the beginning of the school year, children are excited, they're nervous, and they're not really paying attention to everything that's going on, especially while jumping out of the car and going into the school."
Hauber also said drivers should follow the signs and rules in the designated drop-off and pick-up zones at each school. That ensures both student safety and that drivers can flow through as quickly as possible.
"Honor those and drive carefully through those because that is where the kid traffic is," he said. "I know it's not always as quick as people would like, but at least it helps it go and makes some of the foot traffic a little bit more predictable."
Drivers should also cede the right of way to buses and stop when they see red flashing lights.
"Don't hurry up and try and get around them," Hauber said. "Keep the appropriate distance until the lights are off and the bus has entered back in to traffic."
To ride the buses, students need to use their GPS passes, which allow the district to track which students are getting on and off the buses in the event of an emergency or a missing child. Returning students should have them from last year but can get replacements if needed. New students should ask their bus drivers for a pass on the first day of school.
Additionally, parents should have their children to the bus stop five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive each day and be ready to pick their children up five minutes early after school, Hauber said.
"That's helpful so that all children can be picked up and dropped off on time," he said.
