Enrollment is 110 students below projection

Dale Thompson, Of the Record

The first enrollment tally is in for the new school year in the Park City School District.

There are 110 fewer students than projected. As of Aug. 23 there were 4,491 students in the district, with an average class size of approximately 21 students.

The district planned to count enrollment again last Friday. Official numbers will be turned into the state on October 1, but district Business Administrator Patty Murphy does not anticipate much enrollment fluctuation between now and then.

"I don’t anticipate that, I think the numbers will change between now and October 1, but not much," she said.

At the board meeting Vern Christensen hypothesized that many people had moved out of the area.

"He was saying families move out and are selling to people who are now using the home as a second one and do not have children in the district," Murphy said.

The district’s enrollment projection was calculated based on a two percent increase from last year’s numbers. With the lower enrollment numbers Murphy predicts the state will reimburse the district $275,000 less in Weighted Pupil Units than what was anticipated.

Fewer funds from the state will have an impact on the district.

"Yes, a loss always does. But on the other hand we did not receive students we might have had to hire teachers for," Murphy said.
