Ex-politico gets judicial appointment

By Patrick Parkinson, of The Record staff

Summit County has tapped ex-County Commissioner Shauna Kerr, a Democrat, as its next Justice Court judge.

Among the nearly 45 candidates Kerr beat out for the position were finalists Gus Chin, a former Summit County prosecutor, and Taylorsville Justice Court Judge Marsha Thomas.

"I think all three are great candidates," interim Summit County Manager Brian Bellamy said before the County Council approved Kerr’s appointment Wednesday. "They all said we couldn’t have made a wrong choice."

Bellamy nominated Kerr for the post.

The Justice Court handles cases that are generally less serious than those that are filed in 3rd District Court.

Kerr, a lawyer, was a Park City councilwoman and City Hall attorney.
