Fire threatens homes near Kamas

Kids lighting fireworks started a wildfire Monday that burned more than a half-acre of private land at the Kamas East subdivision, the authorities said.

Some flames in the neighborhood at about 1:30 p.m. were 18 feet high, Summit County Fire Warden Bryce Boyer said.

"It threatened two houses," Boyer said.

Mountain brush, sage brush and gamble oak in eastern Summit County is very dry right now, Boyer said.

"Typically, mid-July through August and mid-September is the main fire season," he said. "We’ve gone almost two months without much rainfall."

Boyer said he fought the blaze at Kamas East with help from fire districts in South Summit, North Summit and Park City.

He did not release the names of suspects in the investigation into the cause of the wildfire.

"They’re minors," Boyer said about the suspects. "There will probably be a cost recovery once we make all the final decisions Human-caused fires we will be doing some cost recovery on."

The fire east of Kamas was significant because it threatened structures, he said, adding that a fire in July scorched nearly an acre of land near Echo dam.

"I’ve had 37 fires calls this year so far, which is down significantly from last year," Boyer said. "This time last year I was probably up to 80 or 90 fires."
